A Political Comeback, After a turbulent decade in Canadian politics, the 2025 federal election delivered a dramatic shift: the Liberal Party, led by Mark Carney, is projected to form a minority government. Carney, a former governor of both the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, entered politics as a fresh yet steady hand at a time when Canada’s economy was at a crossroads. This election marked a remarkable comeback for the Liberals, who had faced declining support since the latter years of Justin Trudeau’s leadership. While the party did not win a majority, their 169 seats put them within striking distance—just three short of a majority in the 338-seat House of Commons. The Conservatives, led by Pierre Poilievre, followed closely with 144 seats.

A Nation’s Choice, Voters across Canada went to the polls facing a range of pressing issues—rising inflation, healthcare strains, housing shortages, and a strained relationship with the United States. Many Canadians saw in Carney a calm, experienced economic manager capable of steadying the country during uncertain times. His campaign was built on themes of financial stability, climate responsibility, and national sovereignty. In contrast, the Conservatives offered a populist, anti-tax platform focused on cutting regulations and reshaping federal institutions. But it was Carney’s promise of pragmatic leadership that carried the day in key battleground provinces like Ontario and British Columbia.

Trump’s Surprising Call, In a turn of events that caught many off guard, U.S. President Donald Trump publicly congratulated Mark Carney on his projected victory. Despite Carney’s criticism of Trump during the campaign—especially regarding trade policy and national sovereignty—Trump issued a statement calling the result “a fresh start for Canada” and praised Carney as “a man who understands money.” The two leaders reportedly spoke by phone the day after the election. According to both camps, the call was cordial. Trump emphasized the importance of strong U.S.-Canada ties, and Carney reiterated Canada’s intent to protect its sovereignty while working with all partners on shared economic goals.

The Sovereignty Debate, Throughout the campaign, Carney was vocal in defending Canada’s autonomy. Responding to Trump’s past suggestions that Canada would benefit from closer U.S. integration—or even annexation—Carney fired back with one of the most quoted lines of the race:“America is not Canada, and Canada never, ever will be part of America in any way, shape, or form.”This firm stance struck a chord with Canadian voters worried about increasing American influence over domestic policies, especially on trade, energy, and defense. Carney vowed to renegotiate existing trade agreements and reduce Canada’s economic dependence on the U.S. market.

Governing as a Minority, With a minority mandate, Carney will need to form strategic alliances—likely with the New Democratic Party (NDP), which secured 21 seats. Informal talks have already begun between the Liberals and NDP leader Jagmeet Singh, focusing on shared priorities such as healthcare funding, climate legislation, and affordable housing. However, passing major reforms will require delicate negotiation. Unlike Trudeau’s previous minority, Carney is a newcomer to elected office. Observers will be watching how quickly he can adapt to parliamentary politics and navigate the legislative gridlock that often comes with minority rule.

International Reactions and Expectations, World leaders were quick to acknowledge Carney’s projected win. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called it “a vote for stability and international cooperation.” UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer highlighted Carney’s economic credentials and expressed optimism about renewed Canada–UK trade dialogue. China and India, two of Canada’s largest non-Western trade partners, also extended cautious congratulations, signaling interest in how Carney’s foreign policy may diverge from past Liberal and Conservative approaches. With global eyes on him, Carney has pledged a foreign policy centered on multilateralism, environmental responsibility, and national interest—especially in areas where Canada’s natural resources and Arctic sovereignty are increasingly contested.

The Road Ahead for Carney and Canada, As Carney prepares to take the oath of office, Canada faces a number of daunting challenges. Inflation remains stubbornly high. Public health systems are under pressure. Indigenous reconciliation continues to demand national attention. And while Carney may have impressed voters with his economic know-how, he now faces the real test: delivering results within a fractured political landscape. Trump’s outreach may ease tensions in the short term, but ideological differences between the two leaders are likely to re-emerge. How Carney balances diplomacy with assertiveness—especially on trade and energy—will define his legacy. For now, the tone is one of cautious optimism. A new chapter has begun in Canadian politics, and the world is watching.
